MPB Superintendent Dr. Emily Hersh Celebrated for 28 Years of Service
Dr. Hersh first came to Blythedale in 1991 as a teaching assistant. After 16 years, she accepted the role of assistant principal at Peekskill High School, broadening her administrative experience before returning to Blythedale in 2011, this time as principal. She was appointed to the role of Superintendent in 2016.
During her tenure, she continuously raised the bar on the quality of educational opportunities for medically fragile children. She recognized the critical importance of, and nurtured, the seamless relationship between the School and Hospital. This relationship was particularly important during the pandemic when MPBS was able to remain open while the rest of the state remained closed.
“Throughout your career you’ve preached that education is a vital component of our students’ rehabilitation,” said MPB School Board President Peter Rittmaster during one of several events held in Dr. Hersh’s honor. “And our students repeatedly demonstrate that attending school and being social are key to their recuperation. It’s been my honor to be your partner for the majority of your Blythedale career.”
During the celebration, Chief Operating Officer John Flanagan unveiled signage that will be installed outside near the new sun dial by the School entrance. The sign reads: With our deepest gratitude to Emily Hersh, EdD, Superintendent, Mount Pleasant Blythedale UFSD, for 28 years of tireless commitment to helping children learn while their bodies heal.
“Emily has been a tireless advocate on behalf of our patients and has been unrelenting in ensuring they have access to the same educational opportunities and resources as any other child,” said Blythedale President & CEO Larry Levine. “She leaves a rich legacy characterized by commitment, determination and love.”
Stephen Beovich, who was named MPB Deputy Superintendent earlier this year, took over the role of superintendent on July 1. Mr. Beovich is excited about his new role and looks forward to the collaboration with the Hospital.
"After working with Emily in the Special Acts Coalition and consulting with Blythedale for the past two years, and seeing what a great place it is, I knew that Blythedale was where I wanted to be," said Mr. Beovich. "The exceptional teamwork between MPB and the Hospital is something that really stood out to me. Our collaboration sets us apart from other Special Acts districts and greatly benefits our students in the district. I am excited to work with the Hospital staff and to continue our partnership."
He also expressed his gratitude to his predecessor, noting, "I can’t thank Emily enough for her support and guidance in preparing me for this role."
